PUBLIC MEETING RE: WET/DRY REFERENDUM TUESDAY JANUARY 12TH!
There will be an informational meeting/public forum, beginning at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at the Hamilton City Hall, Hamilton, Alabama. This meeting is concerning the Wet/Dry vote scheduled for Tuesday, February 2, 2010 in Hamilton, Alabama.

Alabama Beverage Control representatives will be present for a question and answer meeting. The Hamilton City Council and members of the Hamilton Zoning Board will answer questions about how the referendum will affect our city.

At the time of the last city council meeting, Monday, January 4th, 2010, Mayor Holliday was asked by a citizen 'if the vote would take place as scheduled'. The Mayor answered that 'the vote was still set for Tuesday, February 2, 2010'.

Please see attached article regarding Overseas Military Voting. I am pleased this legislation passed in the House of Representatives.

Alabama House of Representatives Passes Military and Overseas Voting Legislation
MONTGOMERY, Ala.

Secretary of State Beth Chapman and the Military and Overseas Voting Task Force are one step closer to making electronic voting for overseas voters a reality. The Alabama House of Representatives voted 96-0 in support of House Bill 30, which will further the effort to make Alabama one of the first states in the nation to implement an innovative process for military and overseas voters to vote more efficiently and effectively.
House Bill 30, the Task Force legislation, will give military and overseas voters four ways to obtain a ballot other than the US Postal Service. These other methods include: commercial carriers such as UPS and Fed Ex, a secure fax line, email, and secure electronic transmission. The bill will also authorize overseas voters to return their ballots using those same means except through electronic transmission.
“We are definitely thrilled with the progress that the bill made today. We are hopeful that this level of progress will continue,” Chapman said. “The Military and Overseas Voting Task Force worked extremely hard and has found a champion in Representative Jimmy Martin who understood how essential it was to pass this vital legislation for our men and women in uniform,” she continued. “I am grateful for the support of Representative Martin, the Task Force, and the House of Representatives on this most important issue.”
“The thousands of soldiers who will be deployed from our state before the 2010 General Election and those already overseas should know there are many individuals in Alabama who are working hard to get them a more efficient and effective way to vote.”
Chapman says that the Senate will hopefully take up the bill shortly. “We are optimistic that this progress will continue and that this effort will be realized for our soldiers and overseas voters this year.”

Everyone Counts - Census 2010

Everyone Counts - Census 2010

One of the easiest ways to help your community is to participate in the upcoming Census of 2010. The National Census is conducted every 10 years and will affect our cities, towns, counties and states for the next 10 years. It has been estimated by some local leaders that the community loses $1,500 for each person that is uncounted.

Starting April 1st, 2010 census forms will be mailed to all homes on record in Marion and Winston Counties. Forms will be available locally for those households not receiving a form in the mail.

No Social Security Numbers or Financial Information will be asked or required. Anyone asking for this information in regard to the Census should be reported to local law enforcement authorities.

The 10 questions for the members of each household will include these: name, relationship, gender, age, date of birth, race, and whether the home is owned or rented.

The entire form should take 10-15 minutes to complete and information provided on the forms remains confidential for 72 years.

Being counted is important because:

1. The data collected and numbers reported will affect the political representation of our community.
2. The data collected and numbers reported affect Federal funding allocations for our community.
3. The data collected and numbers reported affect the formulas used to determine resources and attention available to our community during the next 10 years.
4. The data collected and numbers reported are used by potential industry and business who are looking to expand or develop.

Make sure you are counted!

April 24, 2010 - Okra loves southern heat

April 24, 2010 - Okra loves southern heat

Tony Glover
Regional Extension Agent
Alabama Cooperative Extension System

Question: I am a new vegetable gardener and my more experienced neighbor says it is too early to plant okra. Can you give me some advice on when to plant, what variety to grow and some general tips for a novice gardener?

Answer: Okra is an adopted southern crop because it likely originated in Africa from the area where present day Ethiopia and Eritrea are located. Okra belongs to the same plant family as cotton (Mallow or Hibiscus family) and like cotton it requires a very warm soil for seed germination. If you plant okra seed before the soil has properly warmed it will often rot in the cool wet soil. Therefore, the wise gardener will patiently wait for the soil to warm to 75 degrees.

However, the impatient gardener may wisely help the garden soil to warm faster to get a jump on their neighbor. Raised beds with lots of dark organic matter will warm faster by absorbing heat better. Covering the soil with black plastic mulch will also increase the soil temperature considerably. Apply the mulch to the loosened soil about a week before planting and then hope for sunny days. You can even get a greater jump on the season by starting the seedlings indoors about three weeks ahead of transplanting to the garden. Just remember that warm soil is still a must and a sunny location is necessary to avoid extremely spindly plants.

Once the seedlings have sprouted, you may use a light application of liquid fertilizer at about 1/2 the recommended rate. Regardless of whether you start seed indoors or not, it is a good idea to soak the seed over night before planting. In the absence of a soil test before planting in the garden, mix in about two pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer (or equivalent) per 100 square feet. Excessive nitrogen results in excess vegetative growth at the expense of fruit production. You may need very small amounts of extra nitrogen, but don't use more than one ounce of 33-0-0 (diluted in warm water) per 10 feet of row at a time. This can be done every month as needed to maintain good plant color and new growth.

There are several good okra varieties available but the most common and most popular is Clemson Spineless. You may also see Annie Oakley, Emerald, Lee, Spike or even a red pod form such as the heirloom variety called "Alabama Red." Most okra are not hybrids which means you can save your own seed from year to year very easily and expect the same kind of okra to come back each year.

Okra plants get quite large and should be allowed some space to expand. Plant individual okra plants about one foot apart in the row or plant seed about four inches apart and thin to one foot after the seedlings emerge. If you are planting in a raised bed at least four feet wide, plant two rows on the bed two feet apart. In late summer when the plants are crowding each other cut every other plant down to about one foot high and add a little fertilizer. Thin the re-growth to one or two stalks per plant and once they start to bloom repeat the process on the remaining plants. This method will greatly increase your production and keep the plants at a reasonable size for harvesting.

Okra does not have too many serious pests, but you should be on the lookout for fire ants, aphids, Japanese beetles and stink bugs. There are very few materials for controlling fire ants in the garden but the materials available are very safe. Ants will often be associated with aphids because ants take care and protect aphids to harvest the honeydew they secrete while feeding. An application of mild insecticidal soap or even a strong stream of water may do the trick. Although Japanese beetles can do significant damage in a short time, the plants will likely recover without treatment. Picking them off and placing them in a container of soapy water works fairly well. Stink bugs and their relatives can become a problem late in the season, so learn to identify the eggs and nymph stage so you can crush and pick them off before they build up large numbers.

Okra disease problems are mostly below ground which means rotation is crucial to avoid a buildup of nematodes and pathogens in the soil. Avoid planting in the same bed or area more often than once every four years and learn how to rotate all your vegetable crops.

If you follow these tips I think you will have great success with this unique vegetable that loves the southern heat.

GUIN WET/DRY ELECTION by J. Mays

GUIN - By a huge margin ( Yes 617 - No 388 ) the Town of Guin has voted to become one of Alabama's new "Wet" towns under the new law allowing town's with a population of 1000 or more to hold municipal option elections to determine the legal sale of alcoholic beverages inside the city limits.

Earlier this year the cities of Hamilton and Winfield rejected the votes with Winfield staying dry by only 5 votes.

Guin will be the first town in Marion County to allow the sales of alcoholic beverages. This could prove beneficial to the town since it announced earlier this year a new Holiday Inn Express to be constructed on the cities property on I-22 soon.

An Editorial "As I See It" by JMays Beer Truck Spotted in Hamilton, AL Fri., Sept. 3, 2010

An Editorial "As I See It" by JMays Beer Truck Spotted in Hamilton, AL Fri., Sept. 3, 2010

Don't worry though, it did not stop in Hamilton, except at the red lights!

I was born in Hamilton, Alabama, I mean IN Hamilton! Above the "Sanderson Building", Dr. Ware had his medical practice there and that's where he also delivered babies.

I say that to say this, I've NEVER seen a beer truck go through the city limits of Hamilton, Alabama!  I was excited to see a new era in Hamilton.  Even though the credits went to our neighboring town in Marion County, Guin, Alabama...a progressive town!

We were excited as we followed the truck, at a discreet distance out of Hamilton, South on Hwy. 43, to the little town of Guin, Alabama and to the little Shell station on the West side of town.

We actually went inside and saw the busy clerk working away, serving customers...yes, she was selling beer, and asking politely the birthday of each customer.  She had a big smile on her face and I knew why...she knew that her business was good and she would have money to deposit at the end of her shift.  I'm sure it made the manager just as happy..

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't drink much at all, I don't like the way it makes me feel. But there are folks who do purchase the brew and take it home and act very responsibly.

We must get this idea out of our heads that folks can only be alcoholics if they drink.

I do the police report every week on this site and long before there were sales of alcoholic beverages here, there was at least one DUI a week.  Only thing is, we, in Marion County, AL, only get the drunk and not the revenue to pay the police and keep up the jail to house and feed him or her while incarcerated.

It's going to be okay! Just watch and see...Guin's police force can handle anybody who gets out of hand.  Only thing is, Guin is the only town in Marion County, AL. getting the revenue to take care of any situation that might arise.

We had our chance in Hamilton and Winfield!  So we better get ready for our towns to grow toward Guin, the progressive town in Marion County, Alabama.

Comments are welcome. Just keep it civil and don't forget to include your name and address please...thanks!

Phil Campbell Bank Robbery Suspect In Custody In Alabama!

Ronald Pollard, 49, of Florence, Alabama, was "booked" into custody in Phil Campbell, AL on charges of Robbery, 1st Degree  and then transported to the Franklin County Detention Center in Russellville, AL.

Chief Merrell Potter and the Phil Campbell Police Department, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI), the FBI, and the Tunica County, Mississippi Sheriff's Department are all to be commended for their swift handling of this matter.

Editor's note:  As a general rule, we, in Marion County, don't pay much attention to towns in Franklin County, AL.

Phil Campbell is only about 25 miles  to the North of us.  We need to be vigilant! If it can happen to them...it can happen to us!

Oh yes, and just one more thing, one of our own is on the Phil Campbell Police Force!

Gary Wayne Mays, Jr., who served 9 1/2 years with the City of Hamilton, AL., has been an officer with Phil Campbell P.D. for more than 2 years.

Phil Campbell Bank Robbery Suspect In Custody

Only one week after allegedly robbing a bank in Phil Campbell, Alabama, a man identified as Ronald Pollard, 49, of 2011 Hixon Ave., Florence, Alabama, is in custody in Mississippi.

The robbery of the CB&S Branch Bank of Phil Campbell, Alabama occurred Thursday, September 23, 2010.

The suspect was taken into custody by the Tunica County, Mississippi Sheriff's Office today, about 12:30 p.m., in Mississippi.

According to Lt. Marc McCormack, of the Alabama Bureau of Investigation, ABI provided information to the Tunica County Sheriff's Office that Pollard was in the area. The T.C.S.O. set up surveillance and Pollard was taken into custody at a local hotel.

According to officials, an extradition hearing will be held Friday to determine whether Pollard will waive his extradition and be returned to face the robbery charges in Franklin County, Alabama. Meanwhile, Pollard remains in the custody of Tunica County Sheriff's Office.

(All persons charged with a crime are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The charges are merely an accusation unless otherwise stated.)

Chapman Acts to Protect Military Voters

Chapman Acts to Protect Military Voters

Montgomery— Secretary of State Beth Chapman has made changes to ensure military voters have sufficient time for their absentee ballots to be counted in the November 2010 general election. Secretary Chapman ordered corrective measures in accordance with the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment (MOVE) Act to address those instances where, for various reasons, county Absentee Election Managers were unable to transmit Federal ballots not less than 45 days before the November 2, 2010 general election.

The new rule expands the time for processing absentee ballots by 8 days and was necessary due to the unexpected inability of some Absentee Election Managers to transmit Federal MOVE ballots 45 days or more before the November 2, 2010 general election. Secretary Chapman cautions that although the time period for receiving Federal ballots has been extended, all military and overseas voters should return their ballots as soon as possible to ensure their timely receipt.

“We will continue to work to ensure our military men and women are able to vote,” said Chapman. “Those who defend democracy must be able to participate in it fully and without any barriers or hindrances. It’s the least we can do.”

Chapman has been a strong state and national advocate for our nation’s military and their right to vote, including testifying before Congress on the issue. She also created and chaired Alabama’s Military and Overseas Voting Task Force.
